Preparing for Regents Exams in Albany, Rochester, and Buffalo NY

As the Regents Exams loom closer, students are beginning the "test prep" mode. Students that wait another week will begin the "cram sessions" while others go into "panic mode" waiting until the week before the tests. Students may be preparing for 1, 2, or more subject tests to secure themselves one of the regents diplomas.

Students will be taking the regents examinations from June 16th to June 25th. Preparations for these tests should begin one month prior to the test date. The higher a student scores on these tests the higher the level of diploma they can achieve.

The Regents examination subject tests include: Geometry, U.S. History and Government, Earth Science, Chemistry, Comprehensive English I and II, Living Environment, Global History and Geography, Writing, Physics, as well as several foreign languages – French, Italian, German, Latin, Hebrew, and Spanish.

There are few states that have such differentiated high school diplomas. Students can receive one of these honors diplomas by achieving high level scores on multiple Regents examination subject tests. Students can receive a Regents diploma, Regents diploma with an advanced designation, Regents diploma with honors or a Regents diploma with advanced designation with honors.

Open Enrollment? School Choice? Home School? Virtual School?

For most parents this time of year is simple. Sign a form the school sends home stating that your student will still be enrolled next year. For other parents, this choice is not so clear. They are considering their options because they are not happy with their current school or zoned-school.

Here's some information we have complied that may help in choosing the type of learning environment for your student for the next school year.

Although home schooling is legal in all 50 states, laws vary. In some states, home schooling is highly regulated; in others, there is no contact between the state and the parents. Today parents have many options when it comes to providing instruction in the home. However, all of the educational freedoms, requirements, and laws may seem confusing. It is extremely important to understand the requirements of your state before beginning a home school program. Many states require some or all of the following: a letter of intent, proof of a chosen curriculum, quarterly progress reports, yearly testing, end of year evaluations, and a student portfolio of assignments.

Virtual Public Schools – State Funded
Many states now offer parents the option to enroll students in a state funded online instruction program. Some states offer only high school classes, while others offer an entire K-12 curriculum. This type of program allows parents to provide a cohesive, accredited, and guided curriculum for a student learning at home. It may be difficult to gain acceptance into a virtual school because space is very limited.


Virtual Schools – Private Institutions
These online schools are usually (but not always) private schools offering an accredited curriculum; however, they require an annual tuition. The services they offer range from a simple log-in and learn, to portfolio management, yearly evaluations, personal interviews, on-site classes, and more. The tuition costs may vary widely.

Private Independent Study Programs – (ISP)
All private independent study programs (private ISPs) fall under the same legal guidelines as a private school. The administrators of the ISP file the private school affidavit. Private ISP's vary widely in offerings, philosophy and structure. Some offer complete curricula and home study assignments; others serve only as administrative record keepers for independent home schooling families. Many families appreciate the structure, the record keeping, and the anonymity that private ISP's offer.

Umbrella Schools
An umbrella school is generally a private school that also provides services to home-schooled students. A family who home-schools may choose to enroll in an umbrella school in order to become "covered" by the umbrella school. This is very important to a family who does not want to be held accountable by the state. Instead, the family is accountable to the private or “umbrella” school. One of the benefits of this association is that students receive a diploma from an accredited school, which may be important in the college application process. Some umbrella schools dictate the type of curriculum to be used, while others may leave the decision up to each individual family.

Churches and Co-Op Groups
Many churches offer support to home schooling families. Churches often provide space to co-op groups that offer varied classes to interested home-school students. Parents may choose to teach the main academic subjects at home, but seek additional group activities and socialization for their student. Co-ops may offer group classes in art, sports/PE, music, science labs, and many other subjects. Some may utilize a religious-based curriculum or its members may have shared religious beliefs.

Methodologies
Charlotte Mason Method - Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was an innovative educator who developed a unique approach to education.
Classical Education Method - Dorothy Sayers well-known essay "The Lost Tools of Learning" is the basis of the new Classical Christian Education movement.
Eclectic Homeschooling Method - An Eclectic Homeschooler is one who looks at the different approaches and methods of homeschooling and takes from each, forming his own unique philosophy.
Montessori Method - According to Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), learning is a natural, self-directed process which follows certain fundamental laws of nature.
Traditional or School-at-Home Method - Traditional Homeschools are similar to a public school with a complete curriculum and traditional grading system and record keeping.
Unit Studies Approach - The Unit Studies Approach integrates all school subjects together into one theme or topic.
Unschooling or Natural Learning Method - Unschooling or Natural Learning is the philosophy of child-led learning.
Waldorf Education Method - Waldorf education is based on the spiritual-scientific research of the Austrian scientist and thinker Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). According to his philosophy, man is a threefold being of spirit, soul and body whose capacities unfold in three developmental stages.

Teaching Style

I teach by example and I am methodical. I show a student how to solve a problem by going very slowly and by following a sequence of steps. I make sure that the student follows understands each step before moving on to the next one. I then ask the student to solve almost the exact same problem (with a slight change in numbers for example)so that the student learns the method and how to solve the problem by herself/himself. I am very patient but expect the student to be willing to learn. I tell students that learning a subject matter is more important than getting an A in a class - this is because 1. if you learn, chances are you won't forget (at least for a long while) and 2. you will get a good grade as a result.

I have been employed by the IBM corporation for the last 27 years. I held numerous positions in hardware development, software development, telecommunication network development, project management, solution architecture, performance analysis, and others. I find that demonstration though example is the first step to understanding. This allows for an initial exposure to the material and plants seeds of knowledge. Adjuvant to demonstration, motivation and enthusiasm to learn the material must be taught. All the homework in the world cannot replace this! Regrettably, students often struggle due to poor instruction or vague textbooks which erode a student’s motivation. Fortunately this can be overcome with a little outside assistance. My long term goal of teaching is to foster a mature understanding of the subject matter. To master a subject it must be learned from multiple angles before the bigger picture is illuminated. Once a subject is illuminated it must be continually revisited for long-term retention.

To me education is a way of life. My academic career has been driven by a thirst for knowledge. I have earned a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, during which my math, physics, biology, engineering (mechanical and electrical), and other science skills were cultivated. Afterward, I spent another year pursuing a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, which further strengthened those skills. During this program I was contracted to teach biomedical computer science for sophomore level students. With higher academic hopes, I left the M.S. program, to complete a Ph.D. in Biophysics with an emphasis on MRI physics. Teaching Style
Although my formal teaching tenor is fairly short, starting in high school I often found myself in a teaching role while studying with peers. My teaching style relies heavily on starting very hands-on and transitioning the student into independence. I find it’s very helpful for the student and teacher as well, to make mistakes while doing a problem. When initially explaining a problem, students will frequently be too shy to tell you that they don’t understand a concept. Often the best way to coax questions out of students involves them doing problems on their own. Building off of that, I am then able to help construct strategies to highlight their strengths in problem solving and improve on their weaknesses.

Teaching Style
While teaching, I constantly seek input from my students. I always try to make them feel comfortable in class, and to let them know that they are the key to the success of the class. I try to encourage them to participate very often, and welcome all their questions and comments. I usually have my students work in groups to discuss problems. I use small groups (of 3 people) because they take the least time to organize, and they are the easiest to adjust to for those who always work on their own. I also encourage them to get together to do math problems outside the classroom.

Things to consider when hiring a tutor



Tutors are not just for struggling students anymore.
True, many students seek the help of a tutor because they are struggling with a topic or a class, need to pass a test, or want to avoid failing grades; but alternatively, students wanting to advance themselves, qualify for scholarships, or explore new topics also seek out a tutor. The truth is, tutors are the most efficient means by which a student can either catch up or speed ahead.


People you know aren't always the best choice of tutor.
Like trained teachers, quality tutors are proficient at helping students learn. Your neighbor, the friend of a friend, or the college kid on break rarely turn out to be a wise choice of tutor. When selecting a tutor, either as an individual or through a company, it is wise to ask the following questions:

  • What do you expect of the student and the parent?
  • How do you motivate your students?
  • What days and times are you available?
  • Where does the tutoring take place?
  • How long do you expect the tutoring to last?
  • What results do you expect to see?
  • How much do you charge for your services?
  • What is your educational background?
  • What type of tutoring experience do you have?
  • How long have you been a tutor?
  • Do you have proof of a clear criminal background check? (Always Ask to See a Copy)

Many companies will be able to provide a sneak peak at the tutor's qualifications and experience through a short profile. When speaking with the tutors always confirm that what you read matches with what the tutor tells you for both professional and safety reasons. Unfortunately, people have a way of making themselves look or sound better than they really are, so asking these questions upfront is very important to choosing the right tutor.


AND always, always, always be smart and safe when having a tutor come into your home. You should ask for a copy of every tutor's Criminal Background Check before meeting with you or children.
