Not all tutors are created equal.

We understand that choosing a tutor is both an educational and a financial commitment. We know that choosing the right tutor is ALWAYS an important decision to make. We would like to share some of our thoughts on tutoring to help you make an informed decision.

Why tutoring works.
Tutoring works because the tutor provides timely, relevant, clearly explained help that is targeted to the student's specific needs. Free from interruptions, peer pressure, and fear of failure, tutoring creates an environment completely conducive to learning.

Tutors are not just for struggling students anymore.
True, many students seek the help of a tutor because they are struggling with a topic or a class, need to pass a test, or want to avoid failing grades; but alternatively, students wanting to advance themselves, qualify for scholarships, or explore new topics also seek out a tutor. The truth is, tutors are the most efficient means by which a student can either catch up or speed ahead.

People you know aren't always the best choice of tutor.
Like trained teachers, quality tutors are proficient at helping students learn. Your neighbor, the friend of a friend, or the college kid on break, rarely turn out to be a wise choice of tutor. The tutor should have an objective opinion about the student's needs and the progress that is made during each tutoring session. When choosing to work with an individual, you may not have the same guarantees you have with a company that will continue to work with you until you are happy with the results.

Tutoring prices can vary widely.
The price you pay for tutoring should equate in value to the service being provided. Expect to pay less for a shared tutor (more than one student), a tutor just starting out with little experience, and teachers working after school to earn extra money. Expect to pay more for a reputable company that provides tutoring as a service, individuals that have been tutoring in your area for a long time, and learning centers that have a lot of overhead expenses to pay.

Not all tutors are created equal.
Students have more options than ever when selecting a tutor. Private, small group, large group, after-school, online...the choices are endless. How do you know what is right for you? Any professional tutor, whether an individual or through a company, should be able to explain the differences between these types of services and exactly what they can offer you. Effective tutoring requires the student, the parent, and the tutor to all share the same measurable goals. Always ask questions about a prospective tutor's experience, teaching style, and background (tutors working for a reputable tutoring company are typically required to show proof of education, have extensive experience as a tutor, and pass a thorough background check).
Please contact our office to get started with one of our tutors!

We are always happy to speak with you directly, or if you have a busy schedule, we can communicate via email. We are here to provide the type of service that works best for you.

The ABCs of Improved Reading

The ABCs of Improved Reading
National Center for Summer Learning, John Hopkins University

Access to books. It’s critical that kids have access to a
wide variety of books over the summer months, but we
know that access alone doesn’t make a strong impact.

Books that match readers’ ability levels and interests. For
young people’s reading skills to improve, they need to
read books that align with their own reading levels.
Reading books that are too easy or too hard won’t help!

Comprehension, as monitored and guided by an adult,
teacher or parent. The most important piece to making
summer reading effective is the help of an adult who can
ask questions and guide kids to better understand what
they are reading.

With these three ingredients, your summer reading
program will soar!

Preparing for Regents Exams in Albany, Rochester, and Buffalo NY

As the Regents Exams loom closer, students are beginning the "test prep" mode. Students that wait another week will begin the "cram sessions" while others go into "panic mode" waiting until the week before the tests. Students may be preparing for 1, 2, or more subject tests to secure themselves one of the regents diplomas.

Students will be taking the regents examinations from June 16th to June 25th. Preparations for these tests should begin one month prior to the test date. The higher a student scores on these tests the higher the level of diploma they can achieve.

The Regents examination subject tests include: Geometry, U.S. History and Government, Earth Science, Chemistry, Comprehensive English I and II, Living Environment, Global History and Geography, Writing, Physics, as well as several foreign languages – French, Italian, German, Latin, Hebrew, and Spanish.

There are few states that have such differentiated high school diplomas. Students can receive one of these honors diplomas by achieving high level scores on multiple Regents examination subject tests. Students can receive a Regents diploma, Regents diploma with an advanced designation, Regents diploma with honors or a Regents diploma with advanced designation with honors.

Tutoring Success Stories for 2008-09

We just wanted to share some great testimonials from our parents about their students and our tutors working together to improve their grades and knowledge levels this year. This is why we do what we do and continue to be passionate about it every day!

"I wanted to send this email to thank you for the wonderful service that we had with Advanced Learners. My daughter worked with Chad on Calculus and it was a complete success. We think she ended up with an A in the class and we are awaiting the AP scores however she feels she got a minimum of a 3 on the AP test. This is amazing considering that when we started with Chad she had an F in the class due to so many assignments that had not been completed. Chad is a wonderful tutor! I simply cannot say enough good things about him. His style of teaching and his personality along with his technical ability make him a superior tutor. Our entire family loved Chad and looked forward to the days that he would come to the house. Thank you Advanced Learners for such great service and providing us with such a top notch tutor. I would recommend your services to anyone in need of additional help for their students. I of course would also recommend Chad as a tutor for any subject that he teaches."
Stacey F. Mesa, AZ

"I think Richard is Great!!! He helped me raise my grade from doom to a C and I would not have passed without his help. Thanks for responding so quickly your entire office is fantastic!"
Nancy T. St. Petersburg, FL

"I am very pleased with the quality of Kristi's skills. She works well with Easton and he enjoys his time with her. He actually looks forward to his session! I have seen a great deal of progress over the summer."
Nicole R. Hixson, TN

"I was extremely impressed with Patti on Tuesday, September 9. She was competely prepared for me and had looked over the assignments I sent her and made study cards as well as sheets that I could use. I would highly recommend her based on our first session. I am looking forward to our future sessions."
Megan G. Tampa, FL

"We are happy with Parmanand and the help he is providing Paul in Math. Theresa is also doing a good job helping him with English."
Tom & Cynthia H.Woodbury, MN

"Things are great and I would recomend John to everyone."
Othon G. St. Augustine, FL

"Nelson is wonderful!! I got an 80 on my midterm thanks to him."
Julie T. Ft. Lauderdale, FL

"Calvin's tutoring sessions with Ms. Nancy are going well. She has been very helpful to not only Calvin but to me as well. Giving me advice on what to do to help him more. I have told people about the program and hopefully they will give you a call soon. Thanks you for checking up on us. Calvin received his first progress report and he has a 90 in English. I haven't seen a grade like that in a long time so the tutoring is paying off!"

Memorial Day = Summer's almost here! What will your kids do this summer?

Parents can keep teaching students while at home for the summer...and should!

Education does not take place just in the classroom. It takes place everyday and everywhere. New opportunities arise to teach kids and teens about day-to-day choices, routines, activities, and much more that is not always found in books.

Inspiring a student's love of math, finance, and money can be as easy as allowing them to make choices in the grocery store. Give them $10 a week to decide what their "treat" for the week is. Give them a piggy-bank to save for a bigger treat or toy. Track the money they receive, spend and save each week on a spreadsheet.

Check out MoneyInstructor.com for more ideas and more great tips for kids of all ages.

Does your child always seem to be on the computer instead of cleaning their room, studying, or doing yardwork? Help them become more "scheduled" by creating a daily or weekly planner. For each rountine item you want them to accomplish each day, give them so many minutes to use on the computer, or X-Box. For tips on starting early with elementary students visit OrganizedHome.com.

Science doesn't always have to come straight from a book. Talk about all the forms that water can take and ask your kids to give you examples; for teens ask them to tell you how it changes. Water to steam, water to ice, condensation, it's all simple science we experience every day. How about making rock candy and watching the crystals grow? How did that happen?

Visit ScienceMadeSimple.com for great at home lessons.

Open Enrollment? School Choice? Home School? Virtual School?

For most parents this time of year is simple. Sign a form the school sends home stating that your student will still be enrolled next year. For other parents, this choice is not so clear. They are considering their options because they are not happy with their current school or zoned-school.

Here's some information we have complied that may help in choosing the type of learning environment for your student for the next school year.

Although home schooling is legal in all 50 states, laws vary. In some states, home schooling is highly regulated; in others, there is no contact between the state and the parents. Today parents have many options when it comes to providing instruction in the home. However, all of the educational freedoms, requirements, and laws may seem confusing. It is extremely important to understand the requirements of your state before beginning a home school program. Many states require some or all of the following: a letter of intent, proof of a chosen curriculum, quarterly progress reports, yearly testing, end of year evaluations, and a student portfolio of assignments.

Virtual Public Schools – State Funded
Many states now offer parents the option to enroll students in a state funded online instruction program. Some states offer only high school classes, while others offer an entire K-12 curriculum. This type of program allows parents to provide a cohesive, accredited, and guided curriculum for a student learning at home. It may be difficult to gain acceptance into a virtual school because space is very limited.

Virtual Schools – Private Institutions
These online schools are usually (but not always) private schools offering an accredited curriculum; however, they require an annual tuition. The services they offer range from a simple log-in and learn, to portfolio management, yearly evaluations, personal interviews, on-site classes, and more. The tuition costs may vary widely.

Private Independent Study Programs – (ISP)
All private independent study programs (private ISPs) fall under the same legal guidelines as a private school. The administrators of the ISP file the private school affidavit. Private ISP's vary widely in offerings, philosophy and structure. Some offer complete curricula and home study assignments; others serve only as administrative record keepers for independent home schooling families. Many families appreciate the structure, the record keeping, and the anonymity that private ISP's offer.

Umbrella Schools
An umbrella school is generally a private school that also provides services to home-schooled students. A family who home-schools may choose to enroll in an umbrella school in order to become "covered" by the umbrella school. This is very important to a family who does not want to be held accountable by the state. Instead, the family is accountable to the private or “umbrella” school. One of the benefits of this association is that students receive a diploma from an accredited school, which may be important in the college application process. Some umbrella schools dictate the type of curriculum to be used, while others may leave the decision up to each individual family.

Churches and Co-Op Groups
Many churches offer support to home schooling families. Churches often provide space to co-op groups that offer varied classes to interested home-school students. Parents may choose to teach the main academic subjects at home, but seek additional group activities and socialization for their student. Co-ops may offer group classes in art, sports/PE, music, science labs, and many other subjects. Some may utilize a religious-based curriculum or its members may have shared religious beliefs.

Methodologies
Charlotte Mason Method - Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was an innovative educator who developed a unique approach to education.
Classical Education Method - Dorothy Sayers well-known essay "The Lost Tools of Learning" is the basis of the new Classical Christian Education movement.
Eclectic Homeschooling Method - An Eclectic Homeschooler is one who looks at the different approaches and methods of homeschooling and takes from each, forming his own unique philosophy.
Montessori Method - According to Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), learning is a natural, self-directed process which follows certain fundamental laws of nature.
Traditional or School-at-Home Method - Traditional Homeschools are similar to a public school with a complete curriculum and traditional grading system and record keeping.
Unit Studies Approach - The Unit Studies Approach integrates all school subjects together into one theme or topic.
Unschooling or Natural Learning Method - Unschooling or Natural Learning is the philosophy of child-led learning.
Waldorf Education Method - Waldorf education is based on the spiritual-scientific research of the Austrian scientist and thinker Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). According to his philosophy, man is a threefold being of spirit, soul and body whose capacities unfold in three developmental stages.

I teach by example and I am methodical. I show a student how to solve a problem by going very slowly and by following a sequence of steps. I make sure that the student follows understands each step before moving on to the next one. I then ask the student to solve almost the exact same problem (with a slight change in numbers for example)so that the student learns the method and how to solve the problem by herself/himself. I am very patient but expect the student to be willing to learn. I tell students that learning a subject matter is more important than getting an A in a class - this is because 1. if you learn, chances are you won't forget (at least for a long while) and 2. you will get a good grade as a result.

Experience Summary

I have been employed by the IBM corporation for the last 27 years. I held numerous positions in hardware development, software development, telecommunication network development, project management, solution architecture, performance analysis, and others. As much as I enjoy my job, I have passion in Mathematics. I develop new ideas related to my work and expand them into U.S. patents and external technical papers. I informally tutor family and friends attending high school or college. I was a Mathematics teaching assistant at the Univ. of Pittsburgh for 2 years and at the Univ. of Michigan at Ann Arbor for 3 years. I love teaching and sharing my knowledge with others. I have published numerous technical papers and hold numerous U.S. patents as well.

Albuquerque Science Tutors - Chemistry and Physics Tutors available Today!

Stop the concept confusion with an Expert Science Tutor.

The laws of physics apply to practically everything we do and touch every day. The concepts of physics are applied to music, medicine, mechanics, electricity, light, motion, and heat. The college of Maryland has over thirty undergraduate and graduate courses devoted to the intricacies of physics and how it relates to our daily lives. Students taking physics in high school are almost always drawn to this science because they can see how it works around them in each of their actions. However, it is not a simple course to understand; many students love the ideas of physics but need help understanding the laws of physics, especially when it comes to the upper level math that is also required. College students have an even greater propensity to need assistance in the multitude of physics courses.

Advanced Learners offers its clients only the very best selection of tutors. When you request a tutor for a certain subject, you get what you ask for. Our tutors are expertly matched to your individual needs based on the criteria you provide to us. We will provide you with the degrees, credentials, and certifications that each selected tutor holds. I find that demonstration though example is the first step to understanding. This allows for an initial exposure to the material and plants seeds of knowledge. Adjuvant to demonstration, motivation and enthusiasm to learn the material must be taught. All the homework in the world cannot replace this! Regrettably, students often struggle due to poor instruction or vague textbooks which erode a student’s motivation. Fortunately this can be overcome with a little outside assistance. My long term goal of teaching is to foster a mature understanding of the subject matter. To master a subject it must be learned from multiple angles before the bigger picture is illuminated. Once a subject is illuminated it must be continually revisited for long-term retention.

Experience Summary
To me education is a way of life. My academic career has been driven by a thirst for knowledge. I have earned a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, during which my math, physics, biology, engineering (mechanical and electrical), and other science skills were cultivated. Afterward, I spent another year pursuing a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, which further strengthened those skills. During this program I was contracted to teach biomedical computer science for sophomore level students. With higher academic hopes, I left the M.S. program, to complete a Ph.D. in Biophysics with an emphasis on MRI physics. My multi-disciplinary doctoral training had a heavy emphasis on math, physics, and biologic sciences. The doctoral training greatly increased my reading comprehension and vocabulary, as well as, strengthened my grammar and writing skills, which were needed to produce scientific publications. Throughout this training I gave lectures to graduate, undergraduate, and high school students on MR physics.

My 5 years as a United States Marine established important core values such as tact, integrity, discipline, and commitment. I bring these values with me into the classroom. I believe that the success of a student depends more on their level of commitment than on inherent talent. However, learning must be an enjoyable experience in order for a strong commitment to be made. I am passionate about mathematics and the sciences, and this passion shows in my teaching style. Students recognize this passion, and it makes the learning experience fun. I am patient, open-minded, and innovative; so if a student is struggling with a particular topic, I find an alternative teaching approach which better suits their learning style. The success of my students is gratifying, to both student and teacher alike.

Experience Summary
I have been a straight-A student my entire life and I recently graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a 4.0 GPA. I earned my B.S. in Physics (Astronomy emphasis) with a minor in Applied Mathematics. Though my expertise lies in mathematics and the sciences, I am also knowledgeable in topics ranging from history to English grammar and composition. Much of my academic success is due to my ability to prepare for exams. I scored a 32 on the ACT, as well as perfect scores of 800 on the SAT2 Writing and GRE Mathematics exams. I gained teaching-related experience during my year as an Instructional Assistant, in which I assisted students with math, science, English, and GED exam preparation. At the college level, I spent 2.5 years tutoring in physics, math, and astronomy, as well as a semester in a college-level general physics class working as a teaching assistant.

Teaching Style

I love teaching and the reward that it brings. I am a step-by-step oriented teacher. I've had many students return saying how my style of teaching continues to help them in their current studies. In my 14 years of experience, I've learned that many students learn with many different styles. I believe that every child can learn; however, the teacher must reach them at their level. If I have a good understanding of where the student is academically, I can help them to grow academically.

Experience Summary

I've taught middle school for 14 years. My goal in becoming a teacher was to reach those students who had, somehow, fallen through the cracks of education. I taught at a drop-out-prevention school for 7 years. During those years, my student scores continuously rose. I taught 7th and 9th grade at this school. I transferred to a different middle school where I taught 6th & 7th grade for two years and the remaining five years, I taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. I began to tutor after school during my first year to struggling students. I was also listed on the school boards list of tutors. I also worked at an after-school program. During these years, I tutored second graders and up to mathematical levels of geometry, Algebra 1 and Algebra II.

First and foremost, I believe it is important to establish a trusting relationship with those you teach. Throughout my experiences in the field of education, I have found the most fruitful of those relationships to be those in which I was able to work with a student or group of students regularly over an extended period of time to develop a routine and a strong relationship in which great amounts of learning and understanding could be accomplished. Although many people experience obstacles in learning Mathematics, I believe that by presenting multiple ways to approach a problem, every student can find a method that works for them. Every student should be allowed the resources and opportunity to realize that they CAN achieve their goals. I am here to help students who have had difficulty with Math in the past to succeed, and feel confident in both their abilities in Math, and in life.

Experience Summary

As a student, I was always committed to learning and to achieving my goals. As a teacher and tutor, I strive to help others share the same love for learning and for understanding as I do. Now, I help others set goals, and work toward achieving them. I have worked with all ages, all ability levels, and various sized groups and have enjoyed each and every experience. In the past, I have primarily tutored in the subject of Mathematics, but am also trained by the Literacy Council to tutor reading and writing, and have enjoyed volunteering with that organization as well. I believe that I can help anyone enjoy and understand math, and help them feel better about themselves for it.

I always enjoyed teaching. I often was able to teach high school English classes part-time even while I served as college advisor and Guidance Director in 2 different private high schools. I especially liked English literature. It was challenging to get teenage boys to like literature, so I often used videos & other visual aids to help them understand and enjoy reading good literature.

Experience Summary
I always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in the upper grades of grammar school. After attending a private high school on scholarship, I earned another scholarship for university attendance. After graduating, I taught for 9 years in elementary schools. I taught part-time for the next 14 years in a private high school, and also served as college advisor. Since 2003, I have been teaching adults in driving classes part-time.

I want to teach students about themselves, others, and the world around them through literature and learning experiences. All information is presented in ways that all students can relate and understand core concepts to be successful in the classroom and in life. Education is my life. From a very young age, I loved school and learning. It all started with my brother and his learning disability. I tutored him all throughout his academic career. In college I tutored elementary students through the CARE program. I then decided to be an English Education major and have been teaching ever since. Currently, I am finishing my graduate work at East Carolina University and working on the addition of TESL on to my teaching license. As a lifelong learner, I understand the importance of education and on researching the best methods of teaching to all students.

I received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UNC Chapel Hill in 2005.

I love to teach children mathematics. Many students are afraid of mathematics since they were not given the right approach towards the subject. The key is to be strong in the fundamentals and add a little bit of practice.

Experience Summary

I am a double graduate in science subjects. I myself am a student and I always like to learn. I am always in a teaching environment. Recently I was involved in research in physics. This is helping me to develop a more scientific approach. I have been tutoring for 4 years.

Justin H.

Teaching Style

I am a very enthusiastic tutor and, as I stated in the previous section, believe teaching in such a way that the student gains a true mastery of the given subject. In a sense, I believe in each student understanding a particular concept in their own unique way that is consistent with their unique thinking processes. I strive to do this by relating a given concept analogously to something the student already fundamentally understands. I also create new problems to solve that probe the students’ progress and comprehension. I try to make these problems as realistic as possible to make them interesting to the student.

Experience Summary

Being a Ph.D. candidate and appointed research assistant, I very much realize the importance of true comprehension of a subject. Not only do I hold two B.S. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Chemical Engineering but I also carry credits to the equivalent of a Non-Thesis Masters in Applied Mathematics and am one course shy of a minor in Chemistry. I have tutored groups of students for Sylvan Learning Centers, conducted one-on-one sessions with Educational Enrichment and independently, and prepared and delivered lectures for advanced undergraduate chemical engineering courses. I am capable and experienced in tutoring all levels of mathematics, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics and materials science.

Victoria P.
Degree Ph.D. Chemistry University of Southern California
Degree MA Chemistry Bowling Green State University

Teaching Style
I truly enjoy teaching. My strategy involves actively engaging the student in the learning process. I always try to develop personalized programs based on each student's strengths and weaknesses.
Experience Summary
In 2006 I graduated from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) with a Master of Science degree. During my Master's program I worked as a teaching assistant in General and Organic Chemistry Laboratories. I was responsible for a brief introduction of the material prior to every lab period. This greatly helped me to learn how to organize material I was to present and explain difficult concepts in a simple manner. At USC as a Ph.D. student, I had a chance to work for the Student Athletes Academic Service where I was a chemistry and math tutor. In addition, during the spring of 2007 I was working as an assistant for the Organic Chemistry Course at LA Trade Tech College, where I was responsible for weekly sessions.

Andrew H.
Degree ME Atmospheric Chemistry Harvard University
Degree BS Chemical Engineering UC Davis

Teaching Style
Although my formal teaching tenor is fairly short, starting in high school I often found myself in a teaching role while studying with peers. My teaching style relies heavily on starting very hands-on and transitioning the student into independence. I find it’s very helpful for the student and teacher as well, to make mistakes while doing a problem. When initially explaining a problem, students will frequently be too shy to tell you that they don’t understand a concept. Often the best way to coax questions out of students involves them doing problems on their own. Building off of that, I am then able to help construct strategies to highlight their strengths in problem solving and improve on their weaknesses.
Experience Summary
While earning my BS in Chemical Engineering at UC Davis, I became interested in the atmospheric sciences which lead me to graduate school at Harvard University studying Atmospheric Chemistry. At Harvard I was the head Teaching Fellow for an upper division class in atmospheric chemistry. Since graduating last June with an ME, I have picked up tutoring in Los Angeles and currently have one student doing non-calculus based physics. Through my education I have gained extensive experience in mathematics through the calculus level, chemistry and chemical physics, and Newtonian physics.

Saravana P.
Degree M.S Chemistry The University of South Dakota
Degree M.Sc Chemistry IITm
Degree B.S Chemistry Bhrathidasan UNiversity

Teaching Style
While teaching, I constantly seek input from my students. I always try to make them feel comfortable in class, and to let them know that they are the key to the success of the class. I try to encourage them to participate very often, and welcome all their questions and comments. I usually have my students work in groups to discuss problems. I use small groups (of 3 people) because they take the least time to organize, and they are the easiest to adjust to for those who always work on their own. I also encourage them to get together to do math problems outside the classroom.
Experience Summary
I worked as a teaching assistant in Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry courses while I worked toward my own master’s degree at the University of South Dakota. This experience gave me the opportunity to transfer from online tutoring to classroom teaching and individual tutoring. The total experience has educated me with the ability to handle students based on their own style and teach them the subject in creative way.

We are fascinated by chemistry at an early age when we learn how to make an erupting volcano by mixing vinegar and baking soda. For many students this fascination will either wear-off or create a new passion for science once they take their first high school chemistry class. Students taking chemistry for the first time will learn about the periodic table, chemical bonding, molecular structures, chemical equilibrium, and much more. However, if your student is not fascinated by chemistry and they need help to understand the concepts, complete lab assignments, or prepare for test, then we can help. In fact, we have qualified professional tutors that can tutor in any level of chemistry course from high school through college. Tutors are available for the following subject areas:

Principles of Chemistry I- Topics include: atomic structure; thermochemistry; periodicity, bonding and molecular structure; intermolecular forces; properties of solids; liquids, gases and solutions.

Principle of Chemistry II – Topics include: Thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium; acid/base chemistry; oxidation and reduction; kinetics; spectros-copy; introduction to nuclear, organic, inorganic, and polymer chemistry.

Organic Chemistry - Focuses on relationships between molecular structure and chemical reactivity, and stresses the development of sophisticated problem-solving skills in the context of organic reaction mechanisms and multi-step synthesis. Homolytic and heterolytic substitution, elimination, oxidation and reduction reactions; topics in stereochemistry and spectroscopy.

Biochemistry - Topics include: molecular, cellular, and organismal chemical activities. Metabolic pathways and enzymology, biochemical structures and sequences, and genome databases are included.

Things to consider when hiring a tutor

Tutors are not just for struggling students anymore.
True, many students seek the help of a tutor because they are struggling with a topic or a class, need to pass a test, or want to avoid failing grades; but alternatively, students wanting to advance themselves, qualify for scholarships, or explore new topics also seek out a tutor. The truth is, tutors are the most efficient means by which a student can either catch up or speed ahead.

People you know aren't always the best choice of tutor.
Like trained teachers, quality tutors are proficient at helping students learn. Your neighbor, the friend of a friend, or the college kid on break rarely turn out to be a wise choice of tutor.

Expect to pay more for a reputable company that provides tutoring as a service, individuals that have been tutoring in your area for a long time, and learning centers that have alot of overhead expenses to pay.

The student has responsibilities to the tutor, too.
Even the best of tutors cannot make a difference if the student is not committed to academic improvement. Students must enter each tutoring session with all learning materials, an open mind, and a positive attitude.

Why tutoring works.
Tutoring works because the tutor provides timely, relevant, clearly explained help that is targeted to the student's specific needs. Free from interruptions, peer pressure, and fear of failure, tutoring creates an environment completely conducive to learning.

Selecting a Tutor - Part III

Questions To Ask a Tutor or Tutoring Company

When selecting a tutor, either as an individual or through a company, it is wise to ask the following questions:

  • How do you evaluate each student's individual needs?
  • What tutoring methods do you use?
  • What do you expect of the student and the parent?
  • How do you motivate your students?
  • What days and times are you available?
  • Where does the tutoring take place?
  • How long do you expect the tutoring to last?
  • What results do you expect to see?
  • How much do you charge for your services?
  • What is your educational background?
  • What type of tutoring experience do you have?
  • How long have you been a tutor?
  • Do you have proof of a clear criminal background check? (Always Ask to See a Copy)

Many companies will be able to provide a sneak peak at the tutor's qualifications and experience through a short profile. When speaking with the tutors always confirm that what you read matches with what the tutor tells you for both professional and safety reasons. Unfortunately, people have a way of making themselves look or sound better than they really are, so asking these questions upfront is very important to choosing the right tutor.

AND always, always, always be smart and safe when having a tutor come into your home. You should ask for a copy of every tutor's Criminal Background Check before meeting with you or children. If the tutor is a teacher, make them show you their teacher's ID badge and/or call the school to verify they teach there.

If you would like to speak with an advisor directly do not hesistate to contact us toll free 866-358-8867 or send an email to kearneyt@advancedlearners.com. We are always happy to answer parents' and students' questions.

Selecting a Tutor - Part II

What are your options and how do they differ from each other?

Freelance Private Tutors

  1. They set their own rates which vary greatly depending on how qualified and experienced they are and how much they feel their services are worth. Most of the time, the more experience and the higher their degree the more they charge for their time.

  2. They accept checks and cash upfront or at each session. However, there isn’t usually any accountable method of record keeping on a monthly basis and rarely will a freelance individual accept credit cards.

  3. Their schedules are flexible and they are willing to reschedule make-up sessions.

  4. Most freelance tutors are teachers themselves. If they are a public school teacher then you know the county has run a criminal background check and fingerprint check on them. However, if they are not, be weary of possible past criminal activities. Request a background check.

  5. Most tutors are willing to meet in a convenient location, such as a library or bookstore and some will even travel to your home.

  • – The best thing about Freelance Private Tutors – Most of them are experienced teachers with flexible schedules.

    – The worst thing about Freelance Private Tutors – High hourly rates and dependability. Because they are not held accountable by anyone, they set their own rules.

    – One piece of advice – Ask for (and check!) any potential tutor's employment resume, tutoring references, and copy of a background check.

Learning Centers

  1. There is one rate and there is no haggling. They offer discounting, but only for a large commitment and long contract of service.

  2. Centers have always had great programs for students that are struggling with basic skills and have gaps in understanding concepts. However, if a student is “stuck” in an area of Algebra, Chemistry, or needs help completing an essay, Learning Centers are not suited for short-term tutoring.

  3. Most centers do not have true “one-on-one” tutoring. Most offer small groups of 3-5 students or they “monitor” students who are working on their own.

  4. Tutors are employees and have undergone a criminal background and reference check. However, they are not always teachers and do not necessarily have college degrees.

  5. You have a set schedule and will always have a tutor, but many do not accomodate tardy students or allow make-up sessions. You must schedule your tutoring sessions around their hours of operation.

  6. Travel is required. Private tutors have become popular because of the convenience factor for today's busy families.

  7. Learning Centers require an initial assessment test that last approximately 3 hours and costs roughly $200-$250.

  8. Learning Centers typically require you to purchase a long-term program, be careful what you commit to, a promise to help your child succeed is often a cleverly disguised sales pitch.

  9. Always READ THE FINE PRINT and take time to review the paperwork before you sign their legally binding contract.

  10. Some will finance the tutoring costs and most accept credit cards for payment.

  • – The best thing about Learning Centers – Convenient locations and immediate enrollment.

    – The worst thing about Learning Centers – Convenient locations and immediate enrollment. This is a double-edged sword. Competiton among centers is fierce and they have well developed sales methods. Take the time to make an informed decision before signing anything.

    – One piece of advice – Do not sign a long term contract before knowing without hesitation the amount of tutoring your child needs. You should request a trial period to determine how effective their program will be for your student.

Online Tutoring Services

  1. With this type of tutoring you have the obvious difference of human interaction. Online tutors are not in a position to read body language and other non-verbal cues about a student's attitude. This should not be undervalued, as emotions such as frustration and enthusiasm are often expressed through body language and tone of voice, and being sensitive to these things in a student can greatly affect the outcome of the tutoring session.

  2. Online tutors can be great for answering questions that students have, but their effectiveness may stop there. Because they are unable to easily interact with the materials that students have, online tutors tend to be limited to a question/answer type of interaction. In person tutors do not have this limitation, and can interact more freely with the student and the materials.

  3. Online tutors are generally the cheapest way to get a professional tutor, but depending on the typing efficiency of the student, it may not be cost effective.

  4. This service is very different from the teaching or tutoring your student is used to. Students may need help clearly communicating their needs to an online tutor.

  5. Most services do not offer tutoring for younger students, especially those needing reading or math basic skills.

  • – The best thing about Online Tutoring Services – You can get help almost instantly, at any time of day or night.

    – The worst thing about Online Tutoring Services – Each time your student logs in they receive a different tutor. Having a new tutor each time is like starting over. The student and tutor need time to establish exactly what the student needs help with, review the materials, and develop a rapport... all before any true learning can take place.

    – One piece of advice – Most services offer a trial, take advantage of this to make sure that this newest form of tutoring will really work for your student before you make a commitment.

Private Tutoring Services

  1. Most private tutoring services are competitive in their hourly rates and most are less expensive than Learning Centers.

  2. Some services require their tutors to be certified teachers, some hire college students, and some require a minimum of a college degree. Ask about their tutors' qualifications.

  3. Most services run either a local, state, or nationwide criminal background check. Ask for and verify that it is a NATIONWIDE check, local checks may not show any criminal activity if the tutor is new to the area.

  4. Most services offer in-home tutoring, however at your request, many tutors will meet in a convenient location such as the library. Ask about student age limits and their policies for such.

  5. Most services do not offer special programs. Tutors are available to help the student with their school work only. However, some services do offer an initial assessment test for an additional charge at the parent’s request.

  6. Each private tutoring service is different. Some require a minimum number of hours each month, some require upfront fees on a monthly basis, some actually have a revolving charge on your credit card (beware of these). Some services have no contracts and no minimums...compare contracts very closely and look for hidden charges and missed session policies.

  • – The best thing about Private Tutoring Services –You can always find a tutor for your needs and most services want to keep you as a client and will work hard to do so. They specialize in helping you find a tutor that fits your schedule, your grade level and your subject.

    – The worst thing about Private Tutoring Services – Because they are privately held, each one sets their own policies on everything from tutor qualifications to billing, ask a lot of questions and read everything before you begin tutoring.

    – One piece of advice – Most private tutoring services have a knowledgeable Director or Owner, if you are unsure about something or need specific answers, ask to speak with him or her.

Virtual Schools - the good, the bad, and the ...

Virtual schools have exploded across the country with enrollment numbers doubling and tripling each year since the mid-1990's. Initially, virtual schools were a great tool for parents with home bound students with medical conditions to stay home while receiving an accredited education. They were also great for parents who wanted to be home school parents but didn't know how to provide all the academic tools and guidance as an educator. What began as a tool to help parents who either could not or did not want their children in a local public school, has become a "choice" in most states for any parent to take advantage of.

Most states that initially began with their own curriculum and programs have now turned over the keys to their virtual schools to larger companies like Connections Academy and K12. There are hundreds of virtual academies that work as a private school/institution, but these two companies work directly with the states and county school districts to provide a free public school education. However, there are a limited number of seats available and parents must apply early to guarantee a position for a year-long program.

Students typically receive a computer, a printer, and all coursework material when they are registered. Parents receive the name and contact information for their student's guidance counselor and a syllabus that the student will follow. Parents of elementary students will have a hands-on day-to-day responsibility. They will act as the teacher and walk the student through each of their assignments and tests then follow up with the guidance counselor. Parents of high school students can continue this roll, but most students at this stage are capable of following directions and maintaining their own course syllabus. Most high school students are self teaching and communicating directly with the guidance counselor.

Other expanded utilizations of virtual schools are for high school students who need to take make-up classes to meet graduation requirements or for students who want to take additional AP and college credit courses. The virtual schools allow these students to take these additional courses outside of their daily public school routines at no additional costs (once approved). For the students and parents that truly take full advantage of the virtual school's programs and its academic purposes, this is a winning scenario. It's a true benefit for them.

However, there are some pitfalls for parents to watch out for.

Many parents of elementary aged students simply don't want to send their kids off to school and feel it would be "easier" to do it themselves at home. However, without the ability to control a teaching environment in the home a student can quickly fall behind. If parents do not engage their children in other extra curricular activities, elementary aged students will not learn how to socialize with other children. It is also up to the parent to include a portion of their day for physical activity and art/music to maintain a balance of education. It is unfortunate that some parents take on more than they can handle to the detriment of the student.

High school students are a different scenario with many of the same concerns; most of these students are self-teaching while their parents are on the job. Parents put a lot of trust and faith in their children relying on them to complete the necessary requirements all on their own. It is even easier for a high school student taking algebra, biology, and literature as their core subjects to fall behind than it is for the elementary student learning how to multiple and divide. There is also always concern for the extra time on their hands and what they will choose to do with it. Making sure a teenager keeps their mind on their academics while on the computer instead of cyber chatting, twittering, myspace, gaming, or the hundreds of other internet lures awaiting them will tend to be a challenge.
